Starring- Direction- Madhur Bhandarkar Fashion is one of the most costly made films of the diwali releases, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. Fashion is a story of a small town girl Meghna Mathur who comes to the fashion world from Chandigarh, in spite of her father’s disagreement. Fashion shows us the real world underneath the glamorous fashion world, the dark one. It’s a tale of a journey of a model into this world with some adjoining sub-plots. Meghna Mathur played by Priyanka Chopra comes up to the fashion world to become a super model. She comes across several people around her, an abusive model, a struggling male model, a gay designer, a greedy boss. She gradually unfolds the ugly side of the world. Through out her journey, she comes to know that men are fashionably gay here. She learns the internal ugly politics of fashion world and understands that if she has to survive in this world she has “to give up more than just her morals”. She too makes many a compromises to set a strong-hold in this world. Being a middle class girl with typical middle class values, she has to face camera in lingerie. She has to leave her boyfriend, Maanav, played by Arjan Bajwa, who opens his doors when she has nowhere to go. She has to loose her friend, another struggling model Janet, played by Mugdha Godse. Everything in her life has been shattered to climb the ladder of success. She gradually transforms from a non-fashionable small town girl to a supermodel. At the end of her story, she even has to face dumping by Arbaaz Khan, the owner of a modeling agency Panache. Similar to Meghna’s story is the story of another model, Shonali, played by Kangana Ranaut. But the difference lies in that unlike Meghna, Shonali has been dumped but she fails to bounce back. Shonali’s characterization is fraught as a cocaine-snorting to a mentally disturbed model. The styling of the actors done by Narendra Kumar, Rita Dhody and Rick Roy is remarkable and to some extent, first time in Bollywood. Like every Madhur film, this film also is a slice of life, with full of drama. But somewhere Madhur goes over clichés in some of the sequences while portraying some characters. Every actor does justice to his or her role. But Fashion would be more entertaining, had Madhur directed it in a more controlled manner. Posted by subhasis on Thursday Oct 30 reply Comments |
