Devdas in a new look |
|
Sarat Chandra Chattyopadhaya’s famous novel Devdas has always been a subject of interest for the Indian film fraternity. Earlier Devdas has ban made for silver screen for more than three times. These Devdas stories strictly followed the original story of Sarat Chandra. But with time, the presentation of Devdas seems to go through a number of experiments. Sudhir Mishra is making Devdas with Shiney Ahuja and Chitrangada Singh. His ‘Aur Devdas’ is set on the backdrop of political scenario, while director Anurag Kashyap’s adaptation of Devdas would be based on modern day young generation. Anurag Kashyap, who has made action thrillers films like Black Friday and No Smoking, is now first trying his luck with a classic love story ‘Dev. D’. The director himself admitted that actor Abhol Deol is the person who inspired him to make Devdas as in ‘Dev. D’. He says, “Abhay narrated a story to me regarding a man in London and suggested making a modern take on 'Devdas'. That thing hit me very hard. I got interested in the subject and hence 'Dev D' was born. I then scripted the film on the basis of news headlines on the Gen X because I wanted to take the angle of today's youth in the film.” On the one hand, Abhal Deol is the only choice to play the character of Devdas in ‘Dev. D’ for the director, Anurag is also candid about the other protagonists of this flick, “I decided that Mahi Gill will be Paro when I saw her at a party. I later went on to see her work in some Punjabi films…I had to delay the film because I wasn't able to find someone appropriate to do Chandramukhi's role. It is a complex and complicated character. My hunt ended when I auditioned Kalki Koechlin who was one of the last girls to be auditioned.” ‘Dev. D’ is supposed to release next February, 2009.
