Whom will Left propitiate? (06-08-2008) |

Anyone will simply rebuke if he/she is told that the concept of private enterprise in the post-independent period originated first in Calcutta. The erstwhile second city of the British Empire managed its sway in the national economic scenario till the beginning of the 1960s. However, the political skirmishes and unsteadiness in the later decades ailed the state of Bengal along with its capital city and aggravated the industrial climate completely. But the forces instrumental for all these are now in power and appear to be the greatest votary of industrialization! Well, if good sense prevails in anybody, even if it is late, we are beaming. But the way the Left Front government hastened to prove its worth in the process of industrialization is ignominious. What is more the government even acted like a true exploiter while cozening the cultivators and thus grabbed their cultivable lands. All are in the name of industrialization and under the red banner, the new sanctum sanctorum! But the government failed to realize that Singur is in Bengal, the citadel of protests and insurrection against tyranny. Thins is the greatest debacle that the government made and is therefore vitiating the clout. Whether Mamata Banerjee will be able to paralyze the government and retrieve of farmers depends upon time, but the sincerity of the government remains to be seen. It is really in a fix. On one hand it has to retain its industry friendly stance and keep Tata in Bengal, while on the other the CPI (M) state committee is disinclined to let Trinamool Congress (TMC) come to the surface as the custodian of downtrodden. The government has to save Singur if it has to save its kith and kin in the next state assembly election. How will it tackle TMC surpremo then? That's the greatest mystery!
