Karat at stake (28-07-2008) |

It seems that the bone of contention over the expulsion of Somnath Chatterjee refuses to die so soon and for that, perhaps, Prakash Karat is making a hasty visit. But how far he will be able to put down the intra-party differences is indeed a question since a considerable section of the party’s rank and file is dismayed over this decision. There is no doubt that the expulsion of a venerated leader like Somnath Chatterjee, who has served the party for more than four decades at a stretch and also had been the leader of the parliamentary section of the party for consecutive years, was mostly uncalled for. Even some leaders of the state committee, to the inner sources, are finding foul smell and to them it has no relation with the party ideology. This argument holds water since the teachers of discipline themselves are not strict disciplinarians and this was witnessed for several times. For instance, the urge of Karat to form an alliance with Mayavati, who if needed can join hands with the so-called doyens of communalism like BJP at the very next hour, has been rebuffed by several quarters and even by a substantial section of the party. Meanwhile voices of dissension represented by the same old Subhas Chakraborty has come to the surface. But strikingly the state committee of the moralistic CPI (M) prefers to maintain silence since Chakraborty, termed by many as rogue, represents the majority feeling. Karat knows this very well and is also aware that any unexpected development in the state party may devastate his glorious career at the center. He may even loose the stature of media savvy Communist in future! An appraisal of the panchayat polls with discussions on the campaign against the nuclear deal and price rise is just a pretext. Karat must win over the state party to ensure his own future. Posted by subhasis on Monday Jul 28 reply Comments |
