PMO clarifies its perspective |
|
There have been repeated efforts on the part of the PMO to assuage the key partners and outside supporters of the government who are skeptical of the governmental intentions of the nuclear deal. The latest endeavor was its clarification that the civil nuclear agreement would have no relation with India’s autonomy of decision making on foreign affairs or strategic programme in any manner. Well, whatever may be the situation, this must be reiterated since 1947 India has been following an independent foreign policy and has not been cowed by any stubborn foreign power ever. This remained the government’s stand when it faced grave crises in both of 1962 and ’71 and the present UPA government is resolute to follow the same in the context of the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement. To the Constitution of India the strategic autonomy is sacrosanct for the nation. Well, all these have been perturbing the political parties and that made the SP leaders to seek clarifications on the nuclear deal. Samajwadi Party and its leadership has become the center of attraction at this critical juncture since it is the last hope of the government, which is on the verge of sinking. The Left parties have already given the ultimatum, to which any move of the government to “operationalise” the nuclear deal by going to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors will make them withdraw support. Again, there is a raging controversy over the government’s stand on the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline. This also made the PMO elucidate that no compulsion could force India to deviate from this path. This was in response to an enquiry of the SP and somewhat similar answer was given when SP leaders sought explanation whether the deal would undermine India’s nuclear sovereignty. To its assertion, it was an agreement for civil nuclear cooperation and to enable nuclear energy cooperation between the participants only. Posted by subhasis on Friday Jul 04 reply Comments |
