Olympic Torch raising Tension in India

The Beijing Olympic 2008 will be remembered for long as a part of history for the most political reasons since in the history barring very few incidents it has never dared to intrude in this sphere. On the contrary the Olympic 2008 has been volatile from the very beginning due to its venue Beijing that has been sternly handling the issue of Tibet for decades at a stretch. This has aggravated much more due the recent Chinese endeavor to trounce the Tibetans’ frustration in the most brutal way, if not more. However, the entire story, much common to the ghastly happenings of TienanMen Square in the late 80s has not been accepted meekly and far-flung protests in the international arena has been witnessed. The most evident representations of these have been the ways by which the protesters tried to mar the Olympic torch parade in the major cities of the globe. The way in which the movement was directed to quell the entire parade, especially in Paris and London, deserves special mention. Now, the same can be in India also due to the heavy presence of Tibetans in the country, advocated by many independent yet aggressive groups raising voices against gross human rights violations in China.

In India, already scores of people destined to participate in the parade have decided to stay away from the raging controversies, citing multifarious reasons. However, it is certain that the people’s struggle has also induced them to save their skin, and also kith and kin. But along with this it has also brought to the fore the contestation over the inclusion of film celebrities in the entire episode. Sportspersons from all quarters, mostly renowned athletes have lodged strong protests over this very publicity stunt. To their consideration the athletes of distinguished careers along with budding sportspersons should participate in the torch relay. Nevertheless, the dissension is increasing by leaps and bounds with the passing of each day, but the government like many other issues has proved to be hesitant and impuissant to come out with any decisive decision.
