In any organization, management is an essential tool that helps it achieve its stated objectives. Apart from the right use of people and other resources, management also involves planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Labor management is an important part of it, which deals with the operative functions of personnel. In simpler terms, the purpose of labor management in any firm is to ensure that the jobs are done properly and on time. An effective labor management ensures proper planning of labor requirements, recruitment of the right staff, and appropriate training of personnel. It’s also important to motivate employees, provide them with healthy working conditions, and maintain good employer-employee relations. Management often offers wage incentive plans to employees to improve productivity. Each organization has its own specific needs, so there is no universal incentive plan that applies to all companies. A lot of factors should be taken into account before chalking out such plans to make them realistic and attainable. A good labor management policy emphasizes on both making and retaining competent employees for a more profitable operation. For the success of any organization, it is essential for the management to be fair and honest with its employees. If there is a team spirit among employees, many difficult jobs can be handled quite comfortably. A common practice in labor management is ‘praising in public and criticizing in private.’ While praising an employee can encourage him/her to do even better, constructive criticism also helps in improving an employee’s performance. Good employee-employer relationship is vital for the growth of an organization as it creates in employees a sense of loyalty. This is possible if managers are accessible and willing to communicate. Be it written or verbal, the right choice of communication channel is extremely important. While recruiting new personnel, it is sensible to hire someone who will fit into the group of already existing employees. The management of a company should look for someone with skills that will complement those of current employees and fill any void that exists in its operation.
