LEFT DOMINATION

LEFT DOMINATION

Behaviour of left parties in dictating terms and candidates first for Presidential nominee and now for Vice Presidential nominee lead to think that the country is being proxy-ruled by left parties. While left parties wanted Presidential nominee to be with political background, surprisingly they do not want any such norms for Vice Presidential candidate. Talks are also about Vice President being from left parties in bargain to Congress nominee accepted by left parties as Presidential nominee meaning thereby that both Houses of Parliament may be chaired by left leaders.

Instead of achieving unanimity only amongst ruling alliance, system should be that election to posts of President and Vice President may be made above politics by having a convention that Prime Minister may achieve consensus for the nominees of these two posts with Opposition Leader. Such consensus should not be impossible because there are many constitutional posts like those of Chief Vigilance Commissioner, Chief Information Commissioner or NHRC Chairperson where selection can only be done by consensus amongst Prime Minister and Opposition Leader. Simultaneous election to post of Vice President in the same manner as President is elected by all MPs and MLAs can facilitate in the direction of consensus by sharing one post each by ruling and opposition alliances.
