Armed with UK management degree, man becomes R.S.Pura village sarpanch

Kaloen Indo-Pak Border R.S.Pura May 29ANI: At a time when educated youth are shying away from politics by terming it a dirty game, 28-year-old Gurmeet Singh Bajwa has rejected lucrative corporate jobs offers abroad after completing his management studies from the United Kingdom and preferred to become the sarpanch of the Kaloen Panchayat in the R.S.Pura tehsil of Jammu to serve the people of his native village. Gurmeet an MBA from Derbyshire University in Britain has decided to pursue grassroot politics, as he wants to become a role model for youth. This border panchayat consists of five villages, all of them located near the Indo-Pak international border. They have accepted Gurmeet with open arms. He is the most educated sarpanch in Jammu and Kashmir. "I want to become a role model for the people of this border belt where a majority of youth prefer to maintain their distance from politics, which they see as a dirty game," he says. He added: "I did engineering in information technology and an MBA from the Derbyshire Business School. I received offers from many corporate houses. But at the end of the day, it was my affection for my soil which prevailed upon my career." "I have grown up in the dusty streets of my village, so I have a strong desire to make this panchayat a showpiece for the rest of the state," Bajwa said. "My priority is to ensure that these poverty alleviation schemes are property implemented and only deserving people get the benefit of such programmes," he says. "I am working on how to channel the energy of the youth towards positive activities. I have discussed the issue of rising incidence of drug addiction among the youth with a few elderly people of my Panchayat. I am confident that the menace will be controlled in our area," Bajwa adds. Villagers are also very enthusiastic and are hopeful that their sarpanch will finally get them out of the miseries they are facing for the last twenty years of insurgency. The problems of this Koleon panchayat are somehow complex as they are facing militancy and hostility on the Indo-Pak border simultaneously. "He is highly educated and has got his degree from England. The villagers have shown full faith in him and elected him with a record margin. He is young and we are hopeful that he will solve the problems that we have been facing for many years," said Dr. Kiran Kumar, a resident of the Kaloen Panchayat. Village council elections are still on and are being held after a gap of 10 years amid tight security in 16 phases. The elections began on April 13 and would continue till June 30.
