An amount of Rs.50,000 will be paid to seriously injured, while Rs.10,000 will be paid for people with minor injuries. Uttar Pradesh authorities had earlier said that two farmers and two policemen were killed in clashes between locals and police on May 7. Earlier, the farmers' leaders had handed a memorandum addressed to Dr. Singh demanding a compensation of Rs.25 lakh each be paid to the next of kin of those who died in the agitation and Rs.15 lakh each be paid to those injured. The protesting farmers also sought the release of villagers lodged in jail following the incident. The farmers have been agitating since January demanding higher compensation for their lands acquired by the state government. Their demand is that only half their lands should be acquired while the rest should be handed over to the farmers after development. They also want 25 percent reservation for farmers in all schemes of Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway. Apart from this, the farmers have also been demanding for the authorities to give 120 square metre plots to landless farmers and a compensation of rupees 5,00,000 for each acre of acquired land.
