Somnath Chatterjee has reasons to laugh! Well, you may be amazed at this and wonder since he has already been expelled by his own party and is perhaps in a state of compunction. But he has got new friends and that is the reason of his contentment at this hour. There is no doubt the way in which the whole of the UPA has rallied behind him and expressed its support categorically is unusual and adds feathers to the cap of parliamentary democracy. This is, of course, an unusual development in the history of parliamentary democracy where the guardian of the Lok Sabha, the Hon’ble Speaker, is not representing any constitutional political party. But it was evident from the very next minute of his expulsion that he would receive unconditional support from the UPA which is highly impressed by his non-partisan outlook, defiant stance and high caliber of functioning. We have seen that almost the whole of the top Congress and UPA leaders made visits to his residence to express their supports and this is certainly a rare instance. But perhaps this is not the only reason and there is something more behind the curtain. Apart from the intimidating task of finding another person as his successor provided he resigns, the UPA is in great need of the presence and stature of Chatterjee. He has proved his competence by routing the party diktat and this is a serious challenge to the supremacy of CPI (M) and its generalissimo Prakash Karat. The CPI (M) has already forged an alliance with” Dalit ki beti” Mayavati, TDP and others to fulfill the dream of toppling both of BJP and Congress. Again, the UPA has to prove its worth, in this short period, by accomplishing nuclear agreement, curtailing inflation and developing India and also by defeating designs of both BJP and CPM.
