History:

 

The town of Kausani is a hill station situated in the Bageshwar district of the Uttarakhand state of India. It has its own nature's reserve and has had compliments from even Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. He spent about 12 days in 1929 at Kausani and wrote down his memorable commentary on the Gita-Ana-Shakti Yoga. This book has been inspired by the scenic grandeur of this richly gifted spot. The beauty of this region has been contemplated by various poets and writers. Many famous people were born here including the Hindi poet laureate Sumitra Nandon Pant. 

 

Geography:

 

The township of Kausani is located about 1890 meters above the sea level. The city provides a beautiful view of the snow-capped peaks that stand in a stately row and extend over 300 km in length. At the horizon one can view a spectacular sunset and sunrise point from the city. The Himalayan range reaches its pinnacle as the rays of the turn them into crimson and gold.

 

Climate:

 

The city has a pleasant temperature in the summer months due to its high elevation. The summer temperatures here range from 26 ºC to a minimum of about 10 ºC, if it rains. The winter temperatures here range from 15 ºC and go as low as - 2 ºC at times. The rainfall here has a maximum record of 3048 mm and minimum of 1777 mm and can occur through out the year. Light woolens are required during the summer months with heavier woolens in the winters.

 

Economy:

 

Tourism in the area is one of the most important contributors to the economy. Small scale cottage industries exist here and handicrafts made here are also very popular. Agriculture and forestry are the other main occupations of the region.

 

Fairs and Festivals:

 

The city of Kausani is the home to various kinds of fairs and festivals. The biggest amongst these is the Uttaryani Fair which is organized on the occasion of Makar Sankranti every year. Devotees and tourists flock the area to view the fair which is considered to be as pious as a holy dip in the Ganges at Varanasi. Then there is the Shivratri Fair held on the occasion of Shiva Chaturdashi. Even the Kartik Purnima and Dussehera Fair are very famous here. 

           

Tourism:

 

The city is the ideal place for those who want to get away from the pollution and mechanical lives of the city and want to relax for a while. There are also various activities to indulge in here which include trekking. The tourist attractions of the region are the Pindari Glacier at an altitude of 3353 m, which is also a trekking route. Then there is the Kafni Glacier situated at an altitude of 3853 m along with the Sundar Dhunga Glacier. Himalayan peaks like Trisul, Nanda Devi and Panchchuli are popular tourist attractions. Garur and Baijnath Katyuri, Anashakti Ashram, Lakshmi Ashram are some of the popular tourist spots.

 

Transportation:

 

The town can be accessed by road easily. The nearest airport is Pant Nagar about 178 km and the nearest railway station is Kathgodam which is 142 km away.
