History:
The city of Jabalpur is the administrative headquarters of Jabalpur district and was the 27th largest urban conglomeration in India in 2001. It is the 325th largest city or urban area in the world in 2006 and also became the first district in India to obtain the ISO-9001 certificate. The city is known to be the 'tapasya bhumi' or meditation place of a mythological figure known as sage Jabalie. The city also gets its named from this figure. There have been Ashokan relics have been found here and the city was also the capital of the famous Tripuri kingdom in the 10 century. It was taken over by the Kalachuri dynasty that made Jabalpur their capital. During the 13th century, the Gonds seized the region. The city was then ruled by the Mughals for a short period. In 798 the Maratha Peshwa granted the Narmada valley to the Bhonsle princes of Nagpur till it came under the British Raj. The city witnessed the landmark event of the holding the Tripuri Congress session in 1939.
Geography:
The city is located at 23.17° N 79.95° E and has an average elevation of 411 meters. The hills in the region are rich in varied mineral content. Geologists and Archeologists and Paleontologists are constantly searching the area for more. The river Narmada brings fresh water to this area and hence the area is apt for agriculture. The soil here is alluvial and produces great amounts of wheat and rice.
Climate:
Jabalpur has a hot and dry temperate of the Great Indian Plateau. Summers here are hot with temperatures going up to 47 degree Celsius and winters are pleasant. July to September months bring heavy rains due to South Western monsoon.
Demographics:
As per the 2001 India census, Jabalpur had a population of 1276853 with 52% males and 48% females. Jabalpur has an average literacy rate of 75%.
Economy:
The main income of the district is from agriculture due to the River Narmada bringing in fresh water from the Vindyachal Ranges. Commercial crops like pulses, oilseeds, cotton, and sugar cane are grown along with rice and wheat. There are various industries here too which have bases in mineral substances. These lime stone related industries, Electrical goods, Saw mills, Food Processing Industries and many more. Ready made garments are also made here. The city also makes ammunition for the armed forces.
Culture and tourism:
The city has influences of the Gond and Maratha dynasties along with Islamic influence. The tourist attractions here include the Dhuandhar waterfall and the marble rocks, along with the Balancing Rocks, Chausatyogini or the Sixty Four Lady Yogis, the Bargi Dam, Rani Durgavati Memorial and Museum, Kanha National park, Madan Mahal Fort, Sangram Sagar and Bajnamath, Tilwara Ghat and temples like Maa Tripur Sundari Mandir, Chausath Yogini Mandir and Mala Devi Mandir,Garha
Transportation:
The city is well connected through a domestic airport and the roads and railways here are also well developed.
