History:
The city of Indore is the largest city in the Malwa region of Central India. It is also the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh. The city got its name from 'IndoreNIPESH' which had originated from the Indreshwar temple constructed in 1741. The city was founded by Rao Nandlal Chaudhary. The ancient history of the city saw the rules of landlords of the Malwa region. During the Mughal times these families received titles such as Rao and Chaudhari. During the 18th century, control of Malwa passed to the Peshwa clan. The Nizam was made the controller of the Deccan plateau area and a new struggle between the Marathas and the Mughals began. After independence the city became part of the Indian state of Madhya Bharat. Indore also became the summer capital of this newly created state. On November 1, 1956, Madhya Bharat was merged into Madhya Pradesh.
Geography:
Indore is located in the western region of Madhya Pradesh and has an average elevation of 553 meters. Being situated on the Deccan plateau the city has rich natural and mineral resources. This region is also known as the black cotton soil region of India.
Climate:
The city of Indore has drastic temperature variations. The winter season here begins in November and lasts till February with average temperatures of about 10°C. The summer months are April to June and temperatures here range from 35 to 40°C. But the summer nights here are cool and pleasant. The rainy season in Indore is from July to September due to the southwest monsoon.
Demographics:
As per the 2001 census the city had a population of 1,597,441 which also made it the most populated city of Madhya Pradesh. The average literacy rate here is about 72%.
Economy:
The city has some of the biggest industrial enterprises in the country and is also the largest metropolitan city of the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is emerging as a centre of trade and commerce along with a huge corporate presence. The service industry has emerged strongly in this area and there are various other administrative offices here. The cotton industry also flourishes in this region and textiles are still the traditional business.
Education:
The city has some of the well-known institutions of the country including top schools and colleges including esteemed institutes for biotechnology and engineering.
Culture and tourism:
The city has a multi cultural influence due to its vast history of rulers. South Indian, north Indian and Rajasthani food is served here. The main festivals of the city include Ganeshotsav, Deepavali, Gudi Padwa, Bhaubeej with local festivals like Nagpanchmi, and Ahilya Utsav. The Rang Panchami is celebrated with pomp here. Tourist attractions here include Shree Sansthan Bada Rawala, Rajwada, Lal Bagh Palace, Kaanch Mandir, Devlalikar Kala Vithika, and Indore Museum, Indore Zoo, Gommatgiri, Hrimkargiri and various other places.
Transportation:
The city is well connected through rail, road and air transport. The city has a domestic airport which connects it major cities of India. Trains and roads are also well connected to different parts of the country.
