ANI: Though organ transplantation in
India was started in 1971, the
donations from cadavers were negligible. However
Punjab has recently made a beginning in spreading awareness about organ
donation and raising
health issues related to organ transplants. Through cadaver
donation, different organs like
heart and parts of
lungs and
liver can be transplanted to eight
patients and can also benefit 50 others in various ways. But it is not practiced in
India.At the 19th annual
conference of
Indian Society of Organ Transplantation in
Ludhiana, experts expressed their
opinions on
legal, ethical and
social issues in organ transplantation.he speakers from executive, legislative and judiciary fields, who participated in the
conference, agreed to
make presumed consent of the clinically
dead person into a
law so that their organs can be used to save the
lives of others.Every year, up to 1,50,
000 people need kidney transplants but only 5,000 undergo a transplant because of lack of organ
donation in India. "The
conference will help in spreading the message among masses about the need for organ
donation.
Doctors will also get the latest updates about the
drugs, prevention of organ rejection and about various techniques of organ transplantation.
People will also get the message that there is a shortage of organs and that there is a need for awareness programs," said Dr. Baldev Singh Aulakh, chief organisor of the organ transplantation
seminar.With three
eye donation
banks having been proposed in the
state, Punjab is tackling the issue of organ transplantation seriously. In addition, the
government also
plans to set up 75 eye donation centers at the subdivision
level. Earlier, there was not even a single eye donation
bank in the entire state. But, rising awareness about organ donation is the buzzword now, non-
government organizations NGOs, social
workers and the
government is organizing awareness
camps in rural as well as urban areas.
People are now being urged to discard superstitions and
change their attitudes towards organ donation as well as eye donation and come forward to make it a
family tradition. "Organ shortage is a worldwide problem. Demand is not as per the supply. In developed
countries deceased organ donation is a common phenomenon. In US 80 per cent of transplantation is done from deceased donors whereas in developing nations like India, it is
just 0.1 per cent," said Dr. Baldev Singh. "Study has proved that it helps to have separate teams to guide the kins of
brain dead to donate the organ. The team of
professional counselors talks to
doctors and
people in the process of organ donation. In
Spain and some of the
states of
USA this is very successful," said a professor of
medicine,
University of Minnesota, USA.Experts believe 70 percent of the organ
donations in the UK are through cadaver
donations, and through raising awareness it can be practiced in India as well. By Karan Kapoor ANI

ANI: A top US general is learnt to have warned
Iraq that its Iraqs
military would be crippled if foreign forces were withdrawn from there. The warning comes in the backdrop of repeated statements by the Iraqi
government to foreign troops that they were no more required in the
country.
Senior American officer in Iraq, General Raymond Odierno is believed to have presented Iraqs leaders with an inventory detailing the collapse of the Iraqi
security services if forces were pulled back to barracks.Iraq has repeatedly demanded a renegotiation of a
security agreement with
America which would authorise continued US combat operations against
terrorism until 2011, reported The Telegraph.Recently, at a
cabinet meeting Baghdad made
changes in both wording and content of a proposed
security deal from
America, despite US officials saying that the document was final after months of tense talks with Baghdad.Behind the scenes, angry confrontations have taken place over Baghdads backtracking on the deal, as
all three Iraqi
military services remain crucially dependent US training and
support.If Iraq fails to
sign the deal,
America would cut off 6.3 billion dollars in bilateral aid and halt
military sales to the tune of 10 billion dollars.Besides, failure to adopt a Status of Forces Agreement Sofa with
America and
Britain by the end of the year, would mean the foreign troop presence in Iraq constituted an illegal occupation under
international law. ANI

Sydney, Oct 24 ANI:
Pakistan cricket coach Geoff
Lawson is amazed at the lack of aggression displayed by the Australian pace attack, and said Brett
Lee did not have the height to trouble
Indian batsmen on their own pitches. The
Pakistan coach said he could not understand why the Australian quicks, with the exception of Peter Siddle with the first ball of his
Test career, did not try to intimidate the
Indian batsmen with short-pitched bowling. "It was a different
game when
India was bowling, a different ball and a different pitch," the
Sydney Morning
Herald quoted
Lawson, as saying. "The Australians were very defensive. They need to be more aggressive with the ball. I was amazed in the second innings that they didn't seem to bowl a bouncer in the first five overs," he said. "If someone didn't bowl me a bouncer in the first five overs I would be pretty sure I wasn't going to get one. Gautam Gambhir was charging down the wicket at the pacemen. He hooks and cuts in the air, that is how you get him out in one-day
cricket and I don't see why
Test cricket would be any different,"
Lawson added.
Lawson, a former NSW bowling coach, believes
Lee needs to find other ways to succeed on India's unresponsive pitches because he does not deliver the ball from a high trajectory, unlike the steepling 20-year-old Ishant Sharma. Asked what
Lee needed to do to improve,
Lawson said: "He needs to be a
foot taller. They are
flat wickets, he slides on, and he is not doing anything much with it."
Lawson said he intended to complete his contract with
Pakistan, who by next January's landmark series against arch rivals
India will not have played a
Test for 13 months because of a succession of terrorist bombings in the
country. ANI

Politics/RightsSuu Kyi appeals against prolonged detentionYangon, Oct 11 DPA
Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has submitted an appeal against the government's latest
extension of her
house arrest - arguing that it violates the country's
laws, sources said Saturday. The appeal was handed over to authorities by Suu Kyi's
lawyer Hla Myo Myint at the military's new
capital of Naypyitaw Thursday, said sources from the opposition
party National League for
Democracy NLD. Suu Kyi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, has spent about 13 of the past 18 years under
house arrest in her family's Yangon compound. The head of the NLD
party, which won the 1990 general
election, has been kept in near complete isolation since May 30, 2003, when she was charged with disturbing the peace by campaigning in the provinces. Under
Myanmar emergency law, political prisoners can only be kept under detention for a maximum of five years on charges of disturbing the peace. But Suu Kyi's detention was extended last May for another six months, raising
legal questions. Myanmar's ruling junta has been sending mixed signals about the duration of Suu Kyi's incarceration. There have been hints that she may be released within six months. Many observers believe it is unlikely that she
will be released before the next general
election, slated for 2010. The NLD
party won the 1990
polls by a landslide, but the
military government - which has ruled since 1962 - refused to accept the results. Suu Kyi is widely seen as Myanmar's
democracy icon, and is one of the few opposition leaders with enough popular and
international support to undermine the military's monopoly of political power in the southeast Asian nation.--DPAskp/jg306

Politics/TerrorismAfghan president reshuffles five
cabinet ministersKabul, Oct 11 DPA Afghan President Hamid Karzai announced Saturday a reshuffle in five ministries including the interior portfolio, amid mounting concerns about insecurity and rule of
law caused by Taliban-led insurgents and criminal gangs in the
war-torn
country. Mohammad Hanif Atmar, former
education minister, replaced Zarar Ahmad Muqbil as country's interior minister, Karzai's
office said in a statement. Muqbil, who had served as a interior minister since the formation of Karzai's elected
government in late 2004, was appointed minister for refugees and repatriation. The reshuffle in the interior post was deemed a
key plank in a programme to reform the infamous
police forces of the
country, who are widely accused of corruption and misuse of their power. The move was also aimed to
address Western frustration with Karzai's
government, which is viewed as ineffective outside the
capital Kabul. There are
more than 80,000
police forces in the
country. The poorly trained and equipped forces have borne the brunt of Taliban-led insurgency, as compared to Afghan
army soldiers or foreign troops, the are present in the most remote areas of the
country.
More than 750
police forces have been killed in violence so far this year, while
more than 900
police personnel were killed in conflict last year, according to interior ministry's tally. The reshuffle also included ministries of
education,
agriculture and parliamentary affairs. Gholam Farouq Wardak was appointed
education minister, while Mohammad Asif Rahimi was designated minister for
agriculture. Former governor of southern Kandahar province Assadullah Khalid was appointed minister for parliamentary affairs. Khalid, who took part in several anti-Taliban operations in the province, was accused by some Western
countries of corruption and being incompetent to rule one of the country's most importantprovinces, which is also a main hotbed for Taliban insurgents. The presidential statement said the
list of appointees would be sent to the lower
house of parliament for a vote of confidence.--DPApb/jg357

London, Oct.10 ANI: Luck played a huge and significant role in
saving hundreds of travellers at Glasgow
Airport in June 2007 from an attempted terror
strike by
Indian-born medics Dr. Bilal Abdullah and Dr. Kafeel Ahmed,
investigators have told a jury here on Thursday.Islamist extremists tried to set off a
suicide blast by
driving a jeep into the main terminal building on the busiest day of the year, a jury heard. The
vehicle, which was packed with
gas canisters and
fuel containers, caught
fire but was stuck in the
doors of the terminal and failed to explode. The Sun quoted prosecutor Jonathan Laidlaw , as saying: "It was simply luck that protected the
people of Scotland." It was alleged Dr Bilal Abdulla, 29, a junior
house doctor at the oyal Alexandra
Hospital in Paisley, who lived in Houston, Renfrewshire, and Dr. Mohammed Asha, 27, were behind the attack hours after they botched two
car bombs in
London. "These two were intent on committing murder on an indiscriminate and
wholesale scale," Laidlaw claimed. It was alleged that Kafeel Ahmed, who suffered fatal burns on the attack in Glasgow, was the third
man in the terror cell. Laidlaw claimed the terrorists launched the
airport attack on June 30 last year knowing they had only a limited time before they were caught following the failed
London bombings.Laidlaw alleged that Abdulla, who was arrested at the
airport, had been in the passenger seat and had sprayed petrol around the inside of the
vehicle. He added: "Material found in their possession after their arrests reveals they both hold or adhere to extreme Islamic belief and that both
share, despite their profession and their obligation to save life and avert suffering, the same extreme religious and murderous ideology as has inspired other terrorists who have struck and threatened this
country in recent years."Abdulla and Asha deny conspiring to murder and to cause explosions likely to endanger life. The trial continues. ANI
