village UP, Oct 10 ANI: Rescuers are battling hard to save a
child who fell in a deep narrow well in a
village about 45 kilometers from
Agra.Two-year-old Sonu was playing near the 150
feet deep borewell, which was eft uncovered, when he fell inside. The rescue operation was in full swing till late in the night to save Sonu, who is trapped at a depth of around 70
feet."A 35-
feet-deep hole has been dug parallel to the borewell. Oxygen
gas is being supplied inside the borewell through pipe. Earlier, there was some movement of
child, but now since last two to three hours there has been no movement," said Raghubir Lal,
senior superintendent of
police of
Agra. This is not the first case of a
child falling into an uncovered manhole in the
country. In March, authorities rescued a two-year-old
girl Vandana in
Agra who accidentally fell into a 45-
feet borewell at Tehra
village.In a similar incident, a five-year-old
boy, Prince, fell into a 53

Washington, Oct 10 ANI: A new gene, named Toll-like receptor 8 TLR8, has been identified to play a major role in
human susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis, according to a new study.Pulmonary tuberculosis is a contagious
lung disease caused by a bacterium known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis M. tuberculosis. Genome
Institute of
Singapore GIS researchers and their collaborators in The
Netherlands,
Indonesia,
United Kingdom, and the
Russian Federation, also found that it is the males who are more susceptible to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections than femalesTLR8 has previously been shown to recognize some factors from
viruses such as the
human immunodeficiency
virus HIV."We are really excited about this discovery as it is the first time TLR8 has been implicated in bacteria infections. Our analysis of the results from cohort studies in
Indonesia and
Russia suggested that susceptibility was attributed to
genetic variants of TLR8, which is located at the X chromosome," said Dr. Sonia Davila, GIS
Research Scientist and first author of the
article. She added: "Males carrying only one copy of the gene could have a higher chance of suffering from the
disease. These findings open up a whole new area of
research and we hope that it
will increase our understanding of the
disease process of pulmonary tuberculosis." "The identification of a role for TLR8 in TB infection has the potential to open up new areas of exploration in TB host/pathogen interactions and provide researchers and clinician scientists with
novel targets for therapeutic intervention. This is extremely important given the emergence of multi-
drug resistant strains of M.tuberculosis that are refractive to current
treatment regimes," said a co-author of the study. The study was published in the current issue of PLoS
Genetics. ANI

Sports/InternationalWe are under pressure as a couple: David BeckhamLondon, Oct 8 IANS
Football star David Beckham admits he and his wife Victoria are under pressure as a married couple, but says their
kids take it away. The sun.co.uk quotes him saying: We have quite a lot of pressure, honestly, as a couple. But I think having our
children around takes
all the pressure away. Either of us could have had the worst day at
work, but it doesn't matter because then you come
home and see your sons
smiling. There are pressures on us as a couple, but we've had that since we first started going out, so we got used to it over the years. We have a way of working through it by looking out for each other. David, who wants his three
children to lead a normal life, also talked about what first attracted him to his wife. He said: Her legs! She was in the
Spice Girls when I first saw her and she used to wear these mini skirts and everyone used to say: 'Who's your favourite
Spice Girl' I'd always say: 'The one with the legs.' And that was my answer because she had these amazing legs. --Indo-Asian

International/EconomyPakistani rupee plunges to new
record lowKarachi, Oct 8 DPA The Pakistani rupee Wednesday again fell to a
record low against the US dollar to close at 80.30 amid a severe foreign
exchange shortage and concerns of default on foreign
debt repayments. The rupee closed at 80.10-80.30 in the open
market against the dollar compared with 79.30-79.60 Tuesday despite the fact that the central
State Bank of
Pakistan intervened to improve liquidity.
Traders said the central bank's injection of around $100 million failed to break the liquidity crunch as demand for the dollar continued to soar over rising concerns of default. Foreign
exchange reserves with the central
bank have fallen by around 70 percent during the last nine months to $4.68 billion, barely enough to meet one month of
imports. Pakistan's external
debt servicing cost is $3 billion a year, including $500 million due in February, with
imports of around $40 billion and
exports of less than $30 billion. Presently, the
country is facing a current account deficit of around $14 billion along with an inflation rate of more than 25 percent, which doubled during the last 12 months. Analysts say in the given circumstances the central
bank is inching towards using private foreign
currency accounts, something it did in 1998 after freezing
bank accounts. Both Moody's and
Standard & Poor's, two leading
credit rating agencies, have already downgraded
Pakistan to negative and termed the
country among the "riskiest" in the world.
Pakistan is
planning to send a delegation to the
United States next week to seek $10 billion in
emergency assistance to pay its
debt. --DPAsy/dg295

International/DefenceRussia completes pull-out from Georgian buffer zoneMoscow/Tbilisi, Oct 8 DPA Russian forces quit posts in buffer zones around rebel regions of
Georgia Wednesday in their final withdrawal from positions held since Russia's
war with Tbilisi two months ago. The Georgian interior ministry confirmed the complete pull-out from outside South Ossetia, ministry spokesman Shota Utyashvili said Wednesday. He did not mention whether Russian troops had left posts around Georgia's other separatist region of Abkhazia. But Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said the pullout from zones around Abkhazia and South Ossetia would be complete by midnight Wednesday. Hansjoerg Haber, the head of an unarmed European Union mission monitoring the pull-out, called the developments "a very positive sign" - a statement touted by the EU's foreign
Policy chief Javier Solana. Georgian
police have taken back their functions in the vacated
villages and refugees are returning to the border regions, the Georgian ministry said. "Within a half hour of the Russian occupiers leaving this area, internally displaced persons can return to their
homes and Georgian
police will assume full responsibility for ensuring their
security," Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili was quoted by local
media as saying. "By evening
all these
villages in this territory
will be controlled by Georgian
police," he said. Moscow has until Friday to withdraw it forces, under an EU- brokered ceasefire hammered out by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to end the five-day conflict. An EU mission of 300 monitors is to replace the Russian presence in the buffer zones. But
Russia plans to keep 7,600 troops in each of the breakaway regions, which it recognizes as independent republics after blocking Tbilisi's August offensive to reassert control. Russia's actions were overwhelmingly condemned by the West, ramping up
international security tensions and raising concerns about the
safety of
oil and
gas transits to
Europe through the volatile region. Speaking Wednesday at a summit with EU leaders in the French
city of Evian, Medvedev praised the EU's level-headed role in seeking a resolution to the conflict. A peace
conference is set for Oct 15 in Geneva, when the broader issue of Georgia's long term
security is to be debated. Russia's foreign ministry said Wednesday it would push for an arms embargo on
Georgia in the talks. --DPAsy/vm410

water. Israeli

Iran if the Islamic Republic gained possession of
nuclear weapons, prompting Kouchner's

Israel would "hit"
Iran if it developed

journalists apparently mistook his pronunciation of "hit" for "eat," the statement said. Kouchner, who is currently visiting the
