financial crisis.Dr. Singh said: "To say that I am not worried would not be correct. Being a
Prime Minister, it is my duty to be worried when things don't move as planned.""We have had a reasonably good run. I
will be the last person to deny that last few months inflation had become a problem Because of the global factors; the
financial crisis is having some effect on our
economy. Therefore we are obliged to take corrective measures," he added. When asked how long the
India will bore the brunt of
international crisis, Dr. Singh said, "It
all depends upon how long it takes to restore confidence to the global
market financial markets. We are not in complete control. There are bigger players in this. We are

fruits and
vegetables and
eggs declined during the week. And in the non-
food category, sunflower and raw

Business/EnergyPrivate sector
eyes 90
cities for piped
gas distributionKolkata, Oct 17 IANS The private sector has shown interest in distributing piped
natural gas PNG to
homes in over 90
cities, a member of the
Petroleum and
Natural Gas Regulatory Board said here Friday. In the long run, we plan to take this figure up to 300
cities, board member Sudha Mahalingam told
reporters here.The board
will invite
bids later this month or early next month, she said, adding that bidders would be judged on four parameters - the number of household connections they can provide,
network tariff,
gas compression charge, and the length of pipeline. With PNG, the
government is expected to substantially reduce its subsidy on liquefied
petroleum gas LPG for domestic use.Initially one operator
will work in each
city and
will have exclusivity for
marketing for the first five years, Mahalingam said.
Kolkata is not there among the 90
cities targeted by operators as it doesn't have the infrastructure for PNG
distribution.The
Petroleum and
Natural Gas Regulatory Board is a body for
transportation, refining, retailing and
gas distribution network for
oil and
gas companies. It also plays the role of legislator, executive and judicial body for such companies. --Indo-Asian

Islamabad, Oct 18 ANI: Former ISI chief Hameed Gul has revealed that former
prime minister Benazir Bhutto had named him in the October 18, 2007, Karachi blasts - better known as Karsaz bridge carnage - on the US'
directions, and that she had conveyed this to him through three different intermediaries after he had served a
legal notice on her immediately after the allegation was made last year.He said he would not shy away from any probe into the case and also his involvement."I can provide evidence with regard to
communication with Ms. Bhutto. I have no plan to seek pre-arrest
bail as I am willing to join any probe. The
investigators are not required to arrest me since I am available for questioning." "Why has the
government not moved against Pervez Musharraf who was named by late Ms. Bhutto in her last message to Mark Siegel for
planning to assassinate her Is it because Musharraf is America's blue-eyed boy" The
News quoted him as saying in Islamabad yesterday.Gul said that naming him in the case was yet another ridiculous action of the administration. "Perhaps they would get some additional dollars from the US on this 'achievement' but the question remained who benefited from this horrendous act," he said. He reiterated that he would not escape the
country or go underground on account of the registration of the case. Meanwhile, former IB chief Syed Ejaz Shah, who has also been named in the fresh FIR by the PPP, is still in

London, October 18 ANI: Portuguese chemists have created what they call an ion jelly that could make a range of electrochemical devices, including
batteries,
fuel cells and solar cells, which are cheaper and more environmentally friendly.According to a
report in New Scientist, the jelly is made by dissolving gelatine in an ionic liquid - a solution made up entirely of negatively and positively charged ions.Ionic liquids conduct
electricity and are generally very stable, non-flammable and non-volatile. That makes them attractive as environmentally friendly replacements for materials normally used as the electrolytes that separate the positive and negative electrodes in electrochemical devices, such as
batteries. But, such electrolytes must usually be solid, and turning ionic liquids into solid form, by combining them with polymers or nanotubes, is challenging and expensive.Ion jelly could be the answer, according to scientists led by Susana Barreiros from the New
University of Lisbon.Ion jelly was a chance discovery made while mixing a range of
natural polymers, including gelatine, into ionic liquids.Gelatine is derived from the fibrous protein collagen, found in the skin, bones and tendons of
animals. As anyone who has ever made jelly
will know, it dissolves in hot
water into a solution that sets into jelly when cooled.Barreiros and her colleagues found that exactly the same thing happens when gelatine dissolves in ionic liquids. "
All of a sudden, we had arrived at something we were not trying to achieve, a material with very interesting
properties," Barreiros told New Scientist. The researchers immediately showed that ion jelly conducts
electricity, although only around half as well as the parent ionic liquid. But, this was enough to use in simple
circuits and even to manufacture a small electrochemical device. Ion jelly electrolyte carries current to a transparent sheet that changes from clear to opaque when
electric current is applied. The researchers are currently experimenting with different "flavours" of ion jelly, made using different ionic liquids, and say it should be possible to
match the performance of existing, less stable, electrolytes.James Wishart, who works with ionic liquids at the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National
Laboratory, envisages a range of uses for ion jellies."Because of their jelly-like
properties, these materials fill a gap between electrolyte solutions and existing rubbery ionic liquid/nanotube/polymer composites," he said."They have applications in flexible devices and in disposable sensors with low environmental impact," he added. ANI
