Explosion of Cleverly Nurtured Organic Myths

Throughout the international arena there is a growing consciousness, by leaps and bounds, over the use of organic foods. The chief reason behind this generalization happens to be the scores of studies conducted by internationally acclaimed organizations. They have largely been responsible to explore the myths of organic foods and bringing before the populace that they are neither healthy nor beneficial for the cause of environment. In this regard both the exploits and studies of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for the UK, sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have been noteworthy. The researchers have found that both of milk and dairy production happens to be a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs).

For instance, just a litre of organic milk remains in the requirement of 80 per cent more land than that of the conventional form of milk. Besides its potentiality towards the formation of global warming is 20 per cent more and also is found to discharge 60 per cent more nutrients to water sources, along with 70 per cent more towards the formation of acid rain. On the other hand organically reared cows are found to belch twice amount of methane than conventionally reared cattle and methane as a powerful greenhouse gas is 20 times more powerful than CO2. The same is also applicable for meat and poultry which also contribute substantially to GHG emissions. Besides the LCA estimates that a kilogram organic beef brings out 12 per cent more GHGs resulting into high nutirent pollution and acid rain.

Well, these are not all. Apart from this the studies have also explored the myths concerned with the effectivity of organic processes and have tried to make people aware of the grave eventuality. For instance the notion of organic farming as a more sustainable procedure has brought before grievous realities. Only in UK, as has been found, organic tomato production is competent enough to release almost three times the nutrient pollution and uses 25 per cent more water for per kg of fruit than normal production. This heightens the possibility of nutrient pollution by three times more and makes the environment uncertain. The same is also applicable with the saga of healthy organic foods. Already there have been immense studies in Denmark, Austria and Holland and these have unearthed that organic chicken flocks are best possessors of poisoning bacterium Campylobacter. But they are found among but only a third of conventional chickens flocks. In the same way the orgnic chickens are contaminated with Salmonella and almost 72 per cent of them are infected with parasites.

To conclude, the claim that organic food is having a booming condition is falling apart. The situation is far more acute in UK where the demand for organic food has come down to just 1 per cent. Effective study groups proclaim that just few decades back the demand was enormous only in UK and the present statistics state that the demand has faced a sharp decilne and has been reduced by 99 per cent. Though it has been claimed by the concerned trading groups that these are nothing but ploys of evil hands, there is no doubt that people are preferring conventionally manufactured foods in place of organic ones. This indicates that both of Britain's food and posterity are safer than ever before.
