Proper Initiative can Succor Environment

The influence of the Mother Nature on each and every civilization is undeniable. If we are able to render even a subtle look it will be found that any civilization for its growth depends upon its surrounding environment, be it the ancient Vedic culture in India, or the ancient Roman culture at the pinnacle of its glory. As a result it is also the responsibility of the present human civilization to protect the nature from an early destruction. It is true that the environment and nature is facing a great threat, a threat of extinction, the best specimen of which is the global warming. But at the same time it must be said that the present generation is also showing a great awareness of how important it is to protect the environment. For which in the greatest extent individuals, schools, communities and businesses are doing what they can to make the planet a safer place. If anyone is skeptical over these, he or she can cite the example of the Dayton Power & Light. Why is it so special? It is due to the fact Dayton Power & Light has launched a new Air Quality Improvement program in the recent days, which is modernizing their Stuart power station on the Kentucky border in such a manner that will reduce emissions. These steps are going to be adopted so as to keep the air clean, protect people from any kind of respiratory disease and permit future generations to live in a safer and less polluted world. In this respect the Dayton Power & Light is getting the necessary equipments used for this retrofitting from Voith, one of the largest family-owned companies in Europe and a manufacturer of paper, automotive and energy technologies. The compulsion of the project has brought the two companies near each other and their mutual adjustment and performance in the construction and implementation of environmentally sound technology is going to usher new days. If the international corporate sector can take up this instance, there shall definitely be a better future for the posterity. We have to take this initiative that can save us from the impending danger.   read more

Passive Smoking

Passive smoking is a major environmental health hazard. Environmental Tobacco Smokes (ETS) or Secondhand Smoke (SHS) damages the health around the smokers. A non-smoker is subjected to both ‘sidestream’ smokes from the burning tip of the cigarette and the mainstream smoke that has been inhaled and exhaled into the environment by the Smoker. Nearly four-fifths of the smoke that builds up in a room having a smoker is of the more harmful ‘sidestream’ type. Tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemical compounds including at least 40 cancer causing carcinogenic agents. Tobacco smoke also contains a poisonous gas carbon monoxide, which inhibits the transportation of oxygen to the body’s vital organs through blood. The smoke emitted from the tip of a cigarette has about double the concentration of nicotine and tar as it does come out through filter. It also has about three times the amount of the carcinogen henzi(a)pyrene, five times the level of carbon monoxide and about 50 times the amount of ammonia causing immense health problems. Any person exposed to passive smoking may develop symptoms of short- term headache, cough, wheezing, eye-irritation, sore throat, nausea or dizziness and long-term asthma, bronchial problems and lung infections. It is estimated that prolong exposure to second hand tobacco smoke, such as in home, increases the risk of lung cancer by approximately 20 to 25 per cent. The chances of suffering from ischaemic heart disease are greater for those exposed to passive smoking compared to those who are not. Studies have shown that the risk of suffering heart attack is double by regular exposure to passive smoking. . This is more dangerous for children whose immunity power is less than adults. A child’s olfactory system may be damaged by passive smoking. Their cognitive abilities and reasoning skills may also suffer due to passive smoking.   read more
