Forget Telephone Number? You may be an Alzheimer |
|
Alzheimer's disease affects brain functions making one loose his memory, normal movement and behavior, ability to judge and speak and abstract reasoning. It takes about seven to ten years to fully develop to make a man or woman completely unfit to run a normal life. Everyone, however, does not experience the same symptoms at the initial stage and the rate of health deterioration also varies with person to person. In the initial stage an Alzheimer patient may suffer from intermittent memory loss, lapses of judgment and some changes in personality. It is seen that in such condition people often attribute such abnormalities as symptoms of a genius. But things should not be taken so lightly. Those who oppose new challenges and changes should not be dismissed as persons with old age syndrome. Normal people often forget words or names during conversations, but for the Alzheimer patients the problem occurs frequently. It is seen the patients with mild attacks appear subdued or withdrawn in social gathering in fear of making mistakes. A sense of depression sets in among these patients. If not taken medical advice at this stage, the patient’s condition deteriorates further and he may be found putting things in odd places. A purse may end up in a refrigerator or newspapers may go to dishwashers. They often ask repetitive questions or collect things of no value. An Alzheimer patient in the middle stage fails to organize thoughts. They even fail to follow written instructions and seek help choosing proper clothes for an occasion. They may be found in sweaters in summer or in without woolens in winter. The wear shoes on wrong feet. In this stage the patients start having problems in recognizing family members and friends. They may be confused about where they are and cannot tell the date, time and year. When the disease fully blows up, the patient loses the ability to speak, walk or move without assistance. An Alzheimer patient does not die of the disease itself, but of any ordinary complication. Posted by subhasis on Friday Jul 20 reply Comments |
