2G scam: CAG appears before JPC

New Delhi, May 30 ANI: The Comptroller and Auditor General, Vinod Rai, on Monday appeared before the Joint Parliamentary Committee JPC probing the 2G spectrum scam. JPC chairman PC Chacko had asked Vinod Rai to explain how the government auditor quantified the losses in the spectrum allocation at Rs 1.76 lakh crore. The Comptroller and Auditor General report of 2000 clearly stated that the change in policy had caused a "huge loss" to the exchequer. The CAG had then expressed its inability to quantify the losses and details of the license fees and concession offered to operators in the wake of migration policy were not available," JPC chairman Chacko told mediapersons after the last meeting of the Committee on May 18. "Since the figures are available now, the Committee has directed the Telecom Secretary to quantify the losses," he added. Former Telecom Minister A Raja was forced to resign from the Union Cabinet last year after the Comptroller and Auditor General of India CAG faulted him for undervaluing spectrum to favour companies who were largely ineligible for 2G spectrum, and added that the government had probably lost Rs.1.76 lakh crore in estimated revenue. According to the chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation CBI, the loss to the exchequer is pegged at 30,984 crore rupees. ANI
