SPO17SportsMorgan condemns IPL on proposed deal with SLCLondon, Oct 12 IANS
International Cricket Council's ICC President David Morgan has condemned
Indian Premier League IPL commissioner Lalit Modi's offer of $40 million to cash strapped
Sri Lanka Cricket SLC for the long term release of their players for IPL next year.Morgan in an interview to The Daily Telegraph, said the deal Modi proposed to
Sri Lanka last week was "quite unacceptable behaviour against the background of Sri Lanka's signed agreement with the
England and Wales
Cricket Board ECB". As per the deal,
Sri Lanka Cricket SLC
will be sending its team for the IPL league for the next 10 years. The five-member Sri Lankan
cricket delegation
will arrive in
India Oct 18 to finalise the deal with IPL, the country's
sports minister Gamini Lokuge had said Saturday. The deal, if ratified, would force the abandonment of Sri Lanka's Test series in
England in May. Morgan pointed out that only last month the "ICC reaffirmed the primacy of Test
cricket with the unanimous agreement of
all Full Members." "Everyone signed up to the order of priorities, starting with ICC
events like the World Cup," he said. Sri Lanka's 13 best cricketers are contracted to the IPL. Their IPL salaries are many times higher than what they receive from their own board for
international cricket. None would want to miss the IPL final, which is to be staged on May 25, or the semi-finals, or the qualifying round which is due to end on May 19 or 20. The ECB would expect to receive compensation of around two million dollars from
Sri Lanka if they cancel the
tour.If
Sri Lanka sends its second rung team to
England, it would be liable to suspension from ICC and
international cricket for "non-acceptable non-compliance"; but
India commands the votes to prevent a ban, the
report said.
India has also agreed to play another tri-nation series in 2010 which
will bring in additional
money to SLC. --Indo-Asian

Health/CinemaPlease pray that it is not like previous episode: BachchanBy Subhash K. JhaMumbai, Oct 12 IANS "Please pray that it is not like the previous episode," Amitabh Bachchan said to me before leaving for
hospital Saturday for tests after he complained of abdominal
pain.Like
all of us, the mega-
star hoped he wouldn't have to go through the nightmare of December 2005 when, one one not so fine morning he had woken up with a severe stomach ache. He came out of the
hospital only two months later. On Saturday morning, Big B woke up with a
feeling of deja vu. Yup! The
pain was familiar. In the morning, when I wished him "Happy Birthday", he said: "I've been struggling with severe stomach
pain the whole night. The
doctor has just left. I'm under medication and have been prescribed rest.""Is it a
cake ache, Amitji" I joked like a fool, unaware of the gravity of the situation."I don't eat
cake," he replied tersely. "I'll be leaving shortly for a CT scan."That's when it hit me. This was not just a
birthday tummy ache, this was serious. The Big B fought off the
pain for the entire day before his
birthday. He was worried about his
fans.Like he told me a few days before the painful
birthday, he isn't particularly fond of the fanfare that accompanies his
birthday every year. But he goes along with the celebrations for the sake of his
friends and
fans. And that's what he didn't want to spoil this year when the nagging
pain in the stomach started. He ignored it and waited for it to pass so that on his
birthday he would be able to greet his
fans as per tradition each year, and accept their
greetings with a warm
smile and a wave.As the morning of the
birthday approached, it became clear to the Big B that he wouldn't be able to go through the mandatory annual rituals this
birthday.At the time of
writing this, on Sunday evening,
all the close members of the Big B's
family confirm that the tests are on at the Leelavati
hospital. Most likely the situation is not as alarming as it seems. "Don't worry," said daughter-in-
law Aishwarya. And I
thought
not on his
birthday, please! This
man, this icon doesn't deserve this.
Pain and the Big B are major allies and silent co-conspirators.When he's in
pain, he goes about his life as normally as possible. Therefore, no one had an inkling of what was coming. Two days before his
birthday, we spoke for a long time in the morning. When I suggested a
birthday interview he suggested, "Let's
talk first. We'll do the interview later."And we had one of those rare no-holds-barred conversations where he spoke to me about
everything under the sun
and son. He was in his elements. And when he told me about another
project with Tabu after the historical with Chandraprakash Diwedi, I was hysterical."Ok, calm down. That's some way to go. So don't go
writing about it," he warned me. "And don't even ask the director about it," he quickly read my
mind. "He'll
talk sweetly to you and then call me to ask why I've to tell you
everything."The Big B was in one of most relaxed and best moods. That was just two days ago. Who would've
thought his
birthday would take such an alarming turnDon't be surprised when he walks out of the
hospital after the tests and the
fans will still be there to wish him a happy
birthday.And he
will meet them just as he had planned before the
pain.--Indo-Asian

Entertainment/CinemaZee launches Tamil channelChennai, Oct 12 IANS Zee TV launched its Tamil channel Sunday at a glittering function here and announced ambitious plans to soon spread to
Kerala. G. Ramaprasad, the company's chief executive officer for the southern region, said the Tamil channel, the 33rd in the Zee bouquet, possessed an inventory that covered 40 percent of the Tamil
movies produced this year. "We are here to stay and establish our credentials in a big way. At present, we cannot disclose our
business plans, but can confidently say our plans are big and
will be present in
all areas south of the Vindhyas," Ramaprasad said. Zee is already into Tamil
movie production - the first one is to be released shortly. The
company has already branched out into similar ventures in Karnataka, where its channel is second only to the Udaya channel, Ramaprasad added. The channel would consider dubbing its existing
software in other
languages into Tamil, another top official said. Tamil
actress Khushboo, ace director K. Balachander and producer Prabhu
Nepal are currently
producing software for the channel, a
press statement said. Several leading
actors and
actresses were shown welcoming Zee's second foray into Tamil led by thespian Kamal Haasan. The channel was being shown only on select multi system operators in Tamil Nadu as the major carriers - Sumangali
Cable Vision and Tata Sky had blanked it out. A few years earlier, the
company had soft-launched a Tamil channel that telecast mainly dubbed versions of its Hindi
software. It folded up quickly. Zee hopes to fare better this time because of a better
climate for showing its wares, the communiqué added. --Indo-Asian
